Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC) vs Printed Circuit Board (PCB)

December 25 , 2021

Circuit boards play an important role in the functions of countless electronic products. They have conductive paths and various electronic components, which are the basis of electronic work. From smartphones and tablets to calculators and electronic watches, you can find circuit boards in most electronic products. However, there are different types of circuit boards, including printed circuit boards (pcb) and flexible printed circuit boards (FCBs). So, what is the difference between PCB and FPC?

Many designers and engineers consider flexible circuits to be a printed circuit board. Although flexible circuits and PCBs do have the same electrical functions, there are significant differences in structure and machinery. Failure to understand them may result in low yield and field failures. It is important to note the different terms used in the electronics industry. Flexible circuits are called flexible circuits, flexible printed circuit boards, and flexible printed circuit boards. The printed circuit board can also be referred to as a PCB or a simple rigid circuit board. Let me explain the obvious difference first. Flexible circuits can be bent, folded and twisted, but printed circuit boards cannot. This key difference requires flex to be manufactured with different materials, design rules, and different manufacturing processes. The materials used are also different.
